Meagan Botha, BSc (Hons) Science of Sport Performance

Sport has always been a big element in my life, and I have tried many kinds of sport over the years. I discovered triathlon in 2015, which changed my life. My club asked if I wanted to do a coaching course, and that was when I realised that I wanted to pursue working in sport as a career.

Why did you choose to study Science of Sport Performance?

Sport has always been a big element in my life, and I have tried many kinds of sport over the years. I discovered triathlon in 2015, which changed my life. My club asked if I wanted to do a coaching course, and that was when I realised that I wanted to pursue a career in sport.

How has receiving the Carnegie Class of 78-82 Scholarship helped you?

I work part-time alongside my studies and during the summer holidays. My father is nearing retirement age and he may not be able to financially support me. Receiving this scholarship has given me some financial stability and the opportunity to continue my studies.

It has been a goal of mine to go to university for as long as I can remember. This degree is more than just a qualification. I had to leave my family and home in South Africa to come to study here. This really is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me and the scholarship has helped me do the best I can.

“My mother passed away the year just before I came to Leeds Beckett so leaving my father was difficult. I would like to complete my degree in remembrance of her, she was extremely proud and excited when I was offered my place at university. She was my greatest support and best friend.”

What would you like to do after you graduate?

My mother passed away the year just before I came to Leeds Beckett so leaving my father was difficult. I would like to complete my degree in remembrance of her, she was extremely proud and excited when I was offered my place at university. She was my greatest support and best friend.

I would like to become a performance lifestyle advisor and work with young talented athletes in performance sport. I want to take a holistic approach to supporting athletes, including mental health wellbeing and education on anti-doping. It is my dream to be working alongside coaches and supporting athletes through their journey, developing their athletic performance alongside their personal development.
