Professor John Bale

Industrial experience in two construction firms and British Rail before becoming a lecturer.

Higher education entirely by part-time study, culminating in membership of CIOB and an MSc from University College London.

Awarded an industry travelling scholarship to study research and information services in France.

Progressed through lecturer ranks to Head of School, Dean and Pro Vice Chancellor.

Professor of Construction Management - sponsored by Willmott Dixon Limited for 13 years. Principal academic interests: corporate management in construction and construction industry policy.

Awarded university gold medal by Cracow University of Technology, Poland - for work on development of construction management education following the end of the communist era.

Chair of the education committee of the Construction Industry Council, leading to publication of the CIC Education Manifesto in 2000.

President of the Chartered Institute of Building, 2000-01; member of CIOB Board of Trustees since 2008.

Author of variety of papers and articles on construction management and construction education - most recently an Inclusive Definition of Construction Management for CIOB.

Member of Leeds City Council, 2004- 2010. Chaired Children's Services Scrutiny Board and Corporate Governance & Audit Committee.
