Melanie Smith

Melanie Smith BSc FRICS is a chartered building surveyor and access consultant registered with the NRAC. She is a Senior Lecturer in the School of the Built Environment Surveying Team and course leader for BSc Building Surveying at Leeds Metropolitan University. She is part of the Buildings and Sustainability Research Group in the Centre for the Built Environment.

She started her career as a Building Control Officer with Leeds City Council, and then joined a private practice firm in York. She worked as a consultant for a number of Chartered Surveying firms giving professional advice with regard to institutional, commercial and residential property, and particularly historic buildings. She specialised in fire safety matters, access for disabled people, defect analysis, quinquennial inspections, dilapidations and condition surveys, particularly for complex or historic buildings. She sat on the RICS DDA Working Party for some years.

Melanie’s research interests include studies of thermal insulation and condensation risks in residential properties, including work for the Part L Review. She has authored a book on Building Regulations and access requirements.
