Not only are societies a great way to pursue your favourite hobbies, but they’re also a great way to meet new people and make new friends! That’s why many people recommend that you join societies in your first year, but it’s important to remember this isn’t a hard and fast rule. You can join or create your own society at any point in your university life, so it’s best to see what’s out there and find a society that’s just right for you!

What are the benefits of joining a society?

As mentioned above, one of the main reasons that people join societies is to make new friends and pursue a hobby while at university. However, there are a wealth of additional benefits you could experience by joining a society at Leeds Beckett… Read on to find out what these are!

Work towards a worthy cause

Whilst there is a range of ‘just for fun’ societies that you can join, like the Harry Potter society and the Film society, there are also societies that help local causes, as well as supporting the university and it’s staff and students. This includes the Elevate Young Minds society and the St Johns Ambulance society, as well as many more.

So if you’re interested in charity work, or you’re just looking to put your spare time towards a worthy cause, there are plenty of societies you can join to do just that.

Improve your employability prospects

If you start your own society or have a significant role within an existing society, this is something that you can list on your CV, as it can make you stand out from other candidates.

Many society roles will help you learn skills that are widely applicable in the working world, so make sure you play an active role in your society so that you can work towards improving your employability prospects after university!

Host and participate in society events

Most, if not all, societies host their own events from time to time, so if you’re an experienced party planner this could help you put your talents to the test.

Alternatively, there are a whole range of events to attend, including quiz nights, concerts and balls, so you’ll have plenty to fill your calendar with if you fancy taking a back seat from hosting.
