Carnegie School of Sport Sponsored Research Bursaries

Why study at Leeds Beckett?

Hear from our current students:

Jade Morris

I was accepted onto a PhD Studentship within the School of Sport at Leeds Beckett University. My PhD is exploring the immediate impact exercise has on children's cognition and academic performance. My PhD studentship has allowed me to immerse myself into the research world, as well as providing ample opportunities to enhance my teaching skills.

Leeds Beckett University is a fantastic institution with great facilities. More than that, it is defined by the outstanding calibre of its employees. Since arrival, I have been both supported and challenged academically by my supervisors, peers and the wider academic team. The opportunity to perform high quality, original research with a local elite sporting team while gaining experience as a practicing performance nutritionist has been imperative to my development and ultimate full-time employment in high performance sport. I would recommend a LBU PhD studentship to anyone who loves their subject area and wants to truly get better at what they do.

Sponsored Research Studentships

The Carnegie School of Sport is proud of its heritage built from the prestigious Carnegie College of Physical Education. Our history links us to decades of producing successful graduates who are now leaders across national and international sport. It also brings a wealth of expertise which feeds directly into our teaching; with over 80 years’ experience, we are experts in Sport Education.

Our staff make a significant contribution to the field of Sport, Exercise Science, Leisure and Tourism in the UK and beyond; as evidenced in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF). Sustained research activity since REF 2014 demonstrates that we have added to that momentum. Our academics want to advance understanding of complex phenomena and provide students with access to the latest thinking in their field.
This is underpinned by our mission to make a positive and decisive difference to people, communities, organisations in sport and exercise contexts. Our strategy focuses attention around our research strengths. For example, we have recently established a Centre for Applied Obesity Research to provide a focal point for our interdisciplinary research in this area.

Underpinning our success is the inclusive and collaborative ethos that runs through our research student community. This community is vibrant and supportive and attracts exceptional students. We are passionate about providing them with every opportunity to achieve their full potential by working alongside internationally recognised and renowned experts and research groups. Collaboration with external national and international partner institutions is also a key feature of our research. This underpins the importance we place on knowledge exchange, through our CarnegieXchange programme.

Our Research Bursary programme was established in 2008 and we are pleased to announce that our 2018/19 studentships are now open for applications. We encourage you to keep visiting these pages to keep abreast of further opportunities as they are made available.
