This Degree Apprenticeship is based on the existing part-time BSc (Hons) level 6 top-up course and seeks to reflect the learning outcomes for the programme at level six. It has been designed to develop the key areas of building services systems, management of complex projects combined with low-carbon and renewable energy strategies as they relate to the built environment. The qualification is aimed at the Building Services Site Manager standards published by the Institute of Apprentices. The course is also intended to satisfy the requirements of the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) providing the requirements to be able to achieve the professional standard of Incorporated Engineer (IEng.), whilst aiming to bridge the disciplines of sustainability, management and the wider built environment.

Essential information

The courses will take up to five years to complete, dependant on previous qualifications and the course chosen. The apprenticeships comprise on-the-job practical training with academic learning. This approach combines face-to-face teaching, laboratory workshops, reflective practice and formal assessment. The experiential learning element of the courses focus on the student’s workplace and specific areas of project work they are undertaking with regard to meeting key attributes required of a professionally recognised Civil Engineer. Students will work towards the end point assessment for this Degree Apprenticeship, which will provide Incorporated Engineer (IEng) status with the CIBSE via professional review. Employers also engage with professional development to help the student progress through their training.

An appropriate Level 5 qualification i.e. HND, Foundation Degree (FdSc) or Higher Level Apprenticeship in a cognate subject area .GCSE English Language at Grade C or above and Mathematics at Grade B or an equivalent qualification. Apprentices without formal qualifications but with sufficient relevant work experience will be welcome to join the course.

  • Develop existing staff – you can develop your existing staff by allowing them to undertake a Degree Apprenticeship or enabling them to work with a Degree Apprentice in the workforce, through mentoring opportunities and more
  • Meet the targets of the Engineering Council UK and the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), to have most engineering staff with recognised professional qualifications such as Incorporated status

Employer requirements

  • Every apprenticeship must have an Apprenticeship Agreement. This is a contract of service between the apprentice and the employer, confirming the apprenticeship and the standard being undertaken. This will be supplemented by a ‘Statement of Commitment’ signed by the employer, provider, and apprentice, setting out the expectations, roles and responsibility of each party involved in the apprenticeship
  • The apprentice must be already employed or specifically offered a position associated with the apprenticeship opportunity. In this case the employer will be responsible for the recruitment of Degree Apprentices. However, we can work with you to promote your opportunities via our website
  • The employer pays Degree Apprentices at their normal rate whilst they are studying. Apprentices must be paid at least a minimum wage appropriate to their age and job role
  • Apprentices require a mentor in the workplace who will oversee their learning and coordinate with the university
  • Apprentices spend a minimum of 20% of their working hours completing study for the course

Funding

Organisations with a wage bill in excess of £3 million can fund the course fees using their Apprenticeship Levy.

If you are a non-levy paying organisation the government will co-fund your apprenticeship training by contributing 95% of the costs and you will pay the remaining 5% of costs.
