Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeships
Attract enthusiastic new staff and develop the potential in your current workforce through our BSc (Hons) Adult Nursing Apprenticeship. Developed in partnership with local health care providers, our nursing degree apprenticeship offers levy and non-levy paying organisations flexible pathways for your staff to achieve the requirements for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
Our degree apprenticeship is based on our highly successful pre-registration programme. A Nursing Times analysis of the National Students Survey 2017 revealed that 98 per cent of our nursing students were satisfied with their course making us the best university in England to study nursing.
Apprentices are in full time employment whilst studying for the four year degree so they are able to very quickly utilise their newly acquired knowledge and skills within the workplace for the benefit of patients and service users. Modules can be delivered on set days throughout the year, with the remainder of the apprentice’s time spent putting their skills and knowledge into practice either in their employment area or alternative placement areas. These alternative placements enhance the apprentice’s knowledge and understanding of nursing care across a variety of acute and primary care settings in order to meet NMC requirements for registration.

How does the degree apprenticeship work?
The course is expected to take four years to complete and includes a variety of practice experiences and assessments combined with academic studies designed to complement and underpin the apprentice’s practical learning. This blended approach is designed to be adaptable and flexible with a combination of face to face university teaching and online learning. Small group practice support sessions encourage learners to reflect on their developing practice and relate this to professional, legal and ethical frameworks.
We understand that apprentices will have individual talents and interests. We are very experienced in providing high levels of personalised student support and guidance that will address their individual learning needs and enable them to meet their full potential. All nursing degree apprentices will have an Academic Advisor who supports them throughout the course, providing an opportunity to discuss academic progress and assessment feedback throughout the course.
Where will study take place?
This can be negotiated with you but normally students will spend an average of 30 days a year at our City Campus. Students have full access to university facilities throughout their studies.
Who will apprentices be taught by?
Nursing degree apprentices are taught by experienced adult and mental health nurses with teaching and research expertise as well as experience in a wide range of clinical areas. The team works closely with local acute and community providers to ensure that the course remains relevant and contemporary. Every apprenticeship must have an Apprenticeship Agreement. This is a contract of service between the apprentice and the employer, confirming the apprenticeship and the standard being undertaken. This will be supplemented by a ‘Statement of Commitment’ signed by the employer, University and apprentice, setting out the expectations, roles and responsibility of each party involved in the apprenticeship.
- Apprentices must be employed and paid at least a minimum wage appropriate to their age and job role.
- Employers will be responsible for the recruitment of degree apprentices. However, we can promote opportunities via our website.
- Employers pay degree apprentices at their normal rate whilst they are studying.
- Apprentices require a workplace mentor who will oversee their development and coordinate projects and learning with the university tutor.
Levy paying employers with an annual payroll exceeding £3 million per annum, make a payment of 0.5% of any staff costs above this threshold into an apprenticeship levy account. These monies are then available for the organisation to spend on accredited apprenticeship programmes.
Non levy-paying employers can draw down government co-investment to cover 90% of the total cost of training, you are only required to pay 10%.

Applicants to this course are expected to have experience and are required to be supported by employers and employed in a degree nurse apprentice post.
Applicants will normally have Level 3 qualifications equivalent to 80 UCAS Tariff points (from A Levels or equivalent, excluding General Studies) and in a relevant subject in order to undertake study on the course. For those applicants who do not have any formal qualifications at level 3, applicants can be considered under the University Recognition of prior learning from work experience.
Applicants will have attained GCSE English Language and Mathematics at Grade C (Grade 4) or above or an equivalent qualification. Key Skills, Functional Skills, BTEC level 2 and the Certificate in Adult Numeracy/Literacy are accepted in place of GCSEs.
To meet the NMC (2010) R3.3.1 and the 2016 change to the EU Directive on the recognition of professional qualifications, the above qualifications will be achieved through at least 12 years of general education.

Students whose first language is not English, with certificated qualifications, professional qualifications and appropriate work experiences that are equivalent to those detailed above may be considered. In addition to these, they must satisfy the NMC minimum standards for entry to the programme which requires that a standard of English at IELTS 7.0 or better with no skill lower than IELTS 7.0. (NMC 2010 R3.1.2a)
Applicants will be recruited on the basis that their values align with those of the NHS Constitution, as well as having the right skills and aptitude, in accordance with Value Based Recruitment, (Health Education England, Value Based Recruitment Framework, 2014). Shortlisted applicants will be invited to attend a selection day, which will involve an online literacy and numeracy test. Applicants satisfying the pass criteria in these tests will be offered an individual face-to-face interview.
In order to meet NMC and local NHS Trust requirements all applicants must demonstrate that they are of ‘good character’ and must participate in an enhanced online pre-entry DBS check (NMC 2010 R3.5). Any previous cautions, reprimands and convictions must be declared. The presence of a caution, reprimand or conviction will not necessarily automatically result in rejection of the application but will be assessed in relation to the nature, severity and timing of the offence, and whether it is a single incident or repeat offence. Applicants may be invited for interview to discuss the circumstances before a decision is made.
Any DBS not meeting requirements will be discussed anonymously with placement providers and employers. Students will only be offered a place if agreement is given by placement providers.
