Meet the Expert
Colin is Professor of Mobile and Converging Technologies and Head of the School of Computing, Creative Technologies and Engineering. His research interests centre on Green Computing - making the production, use and disposal of IT more environmentally friendly. He has given talks at international conferences and industry presentations. In 2008, he led the development of a new MSc award in Green Computing, the first of its kind in the UK at the time. Colin has worked with colleagues to develop our University’s Green IT strategy and is a committee member of the Green IT specialist interest group of BCS. Recent projects include JANET (UK) funding to develop a low-cost, low energy facility to support distance learning students; two consultancy projects to explore energy monitoring of electrical devices over a computer network; three Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) projects to assess the energy use of thin client technologies; data centre monitoring and the use of IT to control heating and ventilation systems. Colin is a member of three successful European Union consortia: helping to develop Green IT education across Europe; in France, Sweden, Finland, Ukraine and Russia.
