• Philips Research - We developed spatially targeted transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) using an electrode array that measured skin resistance on pain and mobility in patients with osteoarthritis in the knee. We also designed and executed a clinical trial to evaluate its effectiveness.
• Medi-direct International - The team critically reviewed research evidence to underpin the development of a TENS-like device for pain management.
• Advertising Standards Agency - We critically reviewed research evidence to support marketing claims about medical devices made by commercial companies.
• Bioscience Yorkshire Enterprise Fellowship - We developed of a TENS-like device to manage self-harm. This consultancy project resulted in an application for a patent.
Meet the Expert
Professor James McKenna
James McKenna is Professor of Physical Activity and Health in the Carnegie faculty at Leeds Beckett University, and head of the Active Lifestyles research centre. He has an extensive portfolio of peer reviewed publications and grants: covering interventions and community evaluations, spanning schools through to workplaces, and working with older adults. James is currently working collaboratively on the long-term evaluation of a recovery programme targeted at wounded and sick service personnel, based on sport and adventure education. As well as teaching both PG supervisors and Ph.D. students, he is Director of Studies for a range of funded PhD students. His projects range from the qualitative investigation of self-care promotion by doctors and nurses in Syria, to quantitatively evaluating health promotion campaigns delivered through professional football clubs in England.
