Education and research reflecting engagement with dynamic organisations
We offer high quality undergraduate and postgraduate education. This is informed by the research of our academic staff and their engagement with progressive organisations, including major employers. Several of our students are award winners and many go on to pursue highly successful careers. Indeed, our alumni now hold leading positions at Manchester City Football Club, BBC Radio One, London's Olympia exhibition venue and Silverstone in the UK, as well as senior roles elsewhere in the world, including in China, Europe, India and the USA.
On completion of their programme, our students are equipped to enter graduate career jobs. Our efforts to refine what we do in light of current trends have been rewarded with industry accolades from the Institute of Travel and Tourism (ITT) and, uniquely, The Association of British Professional Conference Organisers (ABPCO); both have granted us Centre of Excellence status. The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) has also awarded us a highly prized quality kite mark for our MSc Responsible Tourism course.
Our work is co-ordinated by two specialist centres: the UK Centre for Events Management (UKCEM) and the Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Management. These represent the academic homes of staff and students, and provide opportunities for working with our networks of alumni, employers and policy-makers. Our International Centre for Research in Events, Tourism and Hospitality (ICRETH) manages our research and enterprise initiatives, drawing on staff expertise from across the School.
Many of our academic staff write the text books to which our students, and those on other similar university programmes elsewhere, refer during their studies. Moreover, they regularly publish their original sector-related research in peer reviewed international journals. The most recent official evaluation of research undertaken in the UK ranked the university group (Unit 26) to which we contributed 2nd in the country for ‘research power’ (a measure of quality and volume). Academic staff also supervise a thriving group of PhD scholars and undertake consultancy, development and advisory projects for distinguished organisations such as the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), Meeting Professionals International (MPI) and the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO).
The school has recently received some fantastic rankings and awards including a five star QS rating. We have also moved 16 places in the Complete University Guide subject based league table to 17th, which is assessed on areas including student satisfaction and graduate prospects.

With our University-wide expertise and network of external professional and/or accredited trainers and associates, we deliver courses from pre-employment learning through to team member training and senior executive development at Masters level and beyond.
The International Centre for Research in Events Tourism and Hospitality undertakes high quality multi- and inter-disciplinary research ethically and disseminates the findings using a range of mechanisms, including research reports, articles and books, bespoke programmes of continuing professional development, consultancy, short courses and specialist events.
