Dirty Paintings by Andy Edwards

Andy Edwards from the School of Art, Architecture & Design is exhibiting his work throughout October and November in the porch gallery at Left Bank Leeds.

Dirty Paintings are collages, paintings and drawings that are loosely informed by ideas of beauty and imperfection. The work draws on incidental, urban visual mess.

Andy noticed that the residual paint marks left on the paper protecting his table were often more interesting than the main work itself and so the concept of ‘Dirty Paintings’ emerged. With a desire to select, organise, collage and re-create chaotic formal relationships, he makes work that draws on vernacular, incidental, urban visual mess: traces of old sellotape left to collect dust on a notice board, overpainted graffiti, marker-pen tags. The work toys with notions of spontaneity and expression (inherent in gestural marks) contradicted by the discipline of selecting, planning and ordering.
