PIR Seminar- The politics of defining poverty and why it matters

Speaker- Dr Tom Houseman, School of Social Sciences, Leeds Beckett University

In this paper, I argue that poverty must be understood not as a technical debate about income but in terms of the production of power/knowledge. Drawing on Critical Theory and decolonial perspectives, I explore the hidden epistemology of the dollar-a-day line, tracing the influence of positivism and the World Bank’s own history in the development of this measure, before highlighting some significant practical and political implications.
