India Ahmednagar

Snehalaya

Snehalaya means 'Home of Love', and was founded in 1989 to provide support for women, children and LGBT communities, who have been affected by HIV and AIDS, trafficking, sexual violence, and poverty. We have been working with this charity since 2007.

They are looking for volunteers to support their English school. Snehalaya hosts our volunteers in guest-houses at their Campus and volunteers will work at the on-site school based in Ahmednagar, Maharastra state, India. The scale of what Snehalaya do is huge, and even though this project’s main focus is supporting the teachers and educational activities, volunteers will also gain a real insight into the life and workings of an Indian non-government organisation. Their programmes include supporting women and LGBT individuals escaping sex-work, providing shelter and education for families and their children as well as campaigning for women’s rights and advocacy work.

Snehalaya require individual volunteers to have a set project to work on, which can be decided between your team and Team Leader. There's lots of scope across all subject areas, from events management and accounting to nutrition and sports coaching. They are particularly keen on teachers and youth development with over 260 children on site and more in the city.

Volunteer Role(s):

Volunteers will run activities with an educational emphasis, this may include games, crafts, English teaching, sports, reading, writing and working with children with special educational needs. There is also opportunity for volunteers to support the schools infrastructure, working closely with the teachers on things like behavioural management. Ideally, volunteers from the following backgrounds would be suitable but please also get in touch if you have relevant skills to support the project work:

  1. Teaching & education studies;
  2. Social work & youth development;
  3. Play work;
  4. Sports and PE;
