Thank you for your interest in a role at Leeds Beckett University.  We want you to have a positive experience of applying for our vacancies so to help with your preparation, please consider the following guidance before submitting your application.

The Application Form

Important Information
You are advised to read the job description and employee specification for each particular vacancy carefully before completing an application as the decision whether to shortlist you will be based on the information provided in your application. Curriculum Vitae (CV) alone are not accepted in place of an application but you may include one as additional supporting information. The CV should relate to how you meet the criteria outlined in the employee specification. Please note that up to three attachments, with a maximum size of 5 MB, can be accepted if you are applying online. You should complete all sections of the online form or enter 'Not Applicable' (N/A) if any parts are not relevant. 

Please note that the online form will time-out if you do not save any data for a 60-minute period. We strongly advise that you save your application regularly by clicking on the Save & Continue button. Alternatively, you can type your supporting statement in another document first and then copy and paste the text into the relevant box. Please do be aware that you risk losing data if the form times-out and you have not saved your data regularly.

Please note that the submission deadline for application forms is midnight on the closing date quoted.

Application Tips

Things to make sure that you do
  • submit your application before midnight on the closing date quoted in our advert by clicking the 'Submit' button.
  • tailor your application to meet the needs of the employee specification. It is in your interest to make it easy for the selection panel to see how well you match the requirements of the role.
  • provide evidence and examples of how your previous experience, skills and abilities mean that you match the needs of the job i.e. the abilities/skills specified in the essential/desirable criteria of the employee specification. Remember that you may be able to draw from different areas of your life to provide relevant and useful examples, not just paid employment.
  • provide a full and continuous history of your education/training and unemployment/work experience.
  • complete all essential fields on the online application form. Incomplete application forms will not be accepted by the system.
  • have checked all spelling and grammar. Do not rely solely on computer spellcheckers. It may also help to complete your application in another document first and then copy and paste the text into the relevant box.
  • carefully consider any documentation that you choose to attach. All attachments should be relevant, add value to your application and should not duplicate information provided in the main application.
  • give yourself enough time to fully complete your application so that we have all the information we require to make an informed decision. It is also important that all the information you provide is honest and accurate.
Things not to do
  • Just attach your CV without also addressing the criteria in the employee specification. CVs alone will not be accepted.
  • just confirm that you can do the criteria specified in the person specification without further explanation. You need to provide clear evidence of how you meet each criterion by giving examples which draw upon previous experience, from paid or voluntary employment, education or other interests.
  • cut and paste previous supporting statements that you have used in previous applications! This will be obvious to the selection panel and will have a negative impact on their consideration of your case.
  • over inflate achievements, keep them accurate and honest.
  • make it difficult for the selection panel to assess whether you match the criteria specified for the role. By structuring your application around the criteria identified for the job, you will make your application more relevant and easier to assess.

I can't remember the password I created, how do I request a new one?
Please click on the ‘Forgotten Password’ link. As the process for this differs for external and internal candidates, please read the following:
  • External Applicants: Please enter your details below and select Submit. You should receive an email within 5 minutes containing a link that will enable you to reset your pass-word.
  • Internal Applicants: If you currently work at Leeds Beckett University, please login with the username shown on your staff card and your main University pass-word. Do NOT continue with this Forgotten Password process.
Please note that if you have attempted to login 5 or more times, your account will have been deactivated and you will need to contact hris@leedsbeckett.ac.uk to request that it is reactivated. Being issued with a new pass-word at this point will not reactivate your account.
I have submitted my application, how will I know if I am successful?
You will receive an automated acknowledgement via email when you submit your application. Once the vacancy has closed, the selection panel will review every application that has been submitted and agree which candidates they would like to interview for the role. Shortlisting usually takes place within four weeks of the advertised closing date. If you have not been contacted within four weeks of the closing date you should consider that, unfortunately, your application has not been successful. If there are any significant delays to the selection process due to panel members’ commitments you will be sent an email to inform you.
There are 10 fields in the online application form relating to 10 employee specification criteria. The role I’m applying for has less criteria than that – is that ok?
Yes! The number of criteria on our employee specifications differs across all of our vacancies. The maximum number is 10 however which is why our online application form is set up in this way. If the vacancy you are applying for has only 8 criteria, for example, you are only required to complete the first 8 fields.
I cant remember my username- how do I find this out?
If you have forgotten your user name please contact hris@leedsbeckett.ac.uk to resolve this. Please note that if you have attempted to login 5 or more times, your account will have been deactivated and you will need to contact hris@leedsbeckett.ac.uk to request that it is reactivated. If you are a new user, and do not currently work at the University, please search for a vacancy, click on Apply Online and select the New User Registration link.

Do you have a relocation policy?
Our University will consider providing financial assistance to staff who need to move home as a direct result of taking up appointments with our University. The purpose of the Relocation Policy is to compensate, at least in part, the financial cost incurred by new employees required to relocate their permanent residence to within daily travelling distance of the main Leeds Beckett University campus ('the campus') where they will be based. Supporting Information

This is your opportunity to make your case to the interview panel as to why you would be the best person for the job. In this section please provide any additional information which you feel is relevant to the job for which you are applying. Please read the employee specification carefully, as this identifies the criteria relevant to the role, and take care to address each point in your supporting information.

You should provide information, examples and evidence to illustrate how you feel you meet the criteria for the job. For example, if the employee specification states "ability to use initiative and work unsupervised" it is not sufficient to say "I can work unsupervised and show initiative". You must include examples of your work and/or experience which illustrate these abilities. When providing examples or evidence, you may also refer to any relevant experience acquired outside work such as community, voluntary or leisure interests.

The employee specification is divided into two parts: the first covers Qualifications, Skills, Experience and Knowledge; the second covers Performance Attributes and behaviours. In the first part of the employee specification, there may be some criteria that are not ticked as essential but are still very relevant to the role. It is therefore important that you provide evidence in relation to all the criteria regardless of whether they are ticked as essential or not. The second part of the employee specification covers essential criteria relating to Performance Attributes and behaviours and it is important that you demonstrate fully how you meet these criteria.

If you do not demonstrate that you meet all of the essential criteria, you will not be invited to interview. Meeting all of the essential criteria, however, does not guarantee you an interview. In a strong group of applicants, there may be other applicants who have demonstrated that they meet the criteria to a greater relevance and/or depth.

Additional Information

Ability Tests
We may use ability tests (particularly verbal and numerical tests) and/or the Occupational Personality Questionnaire (OPQ) as part of the selection process. Further information and appropriate practice leaflets are provided to applicants, at the appropriate stage, if tests are to be used as part of the selection process.
Data Protection
In order to be able to conduct business, the University needs to process certain information about its employees, students and other individuals. In so doing, the University must comply with the Data Protection Act 2000 which provides safeguards to individuals about the collection, use, storage and retention of personal information by the University in manual/computer based information systems. In recruitment and selection, this data is primarily held for internal monitoring and external benchmarking purposes.
Health Assessment
All offers of appointment to a position with the University are subject to satisfactory health assessment through completion of a health questionnaire.
