BA (Hons) Sport Marketing student Max Green will line up for England Under 20's, whilst BSc (Hons) Sport Marketing student Callum Sheldon will pack down in Scotland’s starting line-up as they host the Auld Enemy at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld on Friday evening.
Max will start at scrum-half for England, who will be looking to retain their Championship crown, whilst Callum will start at tighthead prop as part of an experienced Scottish pack.
As well as studying at Leeds Beckett, Max plays for Yorkshire Carnegie and has made four appearances this season after making his debut in September. Whilst Callum joined Leeds Beckett this year, Max was part of the Leeds Beckett side who were crowned national student champions at Twickenham in May 2015 as well as being part of the triumphant team who beat the University of Leeds in the Varsity match 27-13 at Headingley Carnegie Stadium in October.
Speaking about the news, Colin Stephens, Leeds Beckett head coach, said: “I’m really thrilled for both Callum and Max. It’s fantastic for them individually and for us as a University that they’ll be representing their countries at Under 20 level. It will be an interesting challenge to see them come up against each other on Friday evening and I hope that they will thoroughly enjoy the occasion.”
Speaking ahead of the game, England Head Coach, John Callard, said: “The players have trained really well this week, they work hard for each other, and I’m encouraged with where we are at. Credit goes to all the coaches for the progress that this group has made.
“The first game of any Championship is always tough, especially playing away in Scotland, but the players are excited about getting started.”
Scotland Head Coach, John Dalziel, added: “We’ve got a big and experienced pack – all of whom were involved throughout last year’s under-20 season – and a wealth of experience at this level in the backline, so we’re excited about what the team has to offer.
“The players who have made the step up to under-20 this year have really added to the group and have shown they deserve their call-up.
“The mantra of this team is winning in blue, and a strong core of this group have had the buzz of victory on home soil, which is a real positive, and adds to the sense of confidence in the squad.
“We’re excited for the challenge ahead, and hope to get a big and passionate crowd along to welcome us to our new home at Broadwood.”
