American poet to talk at Leeds Beckett
Dworkin, an English Professor at the University of Utah, will be discussing his new book, No Medium, which looks at works of art, literature and music that are blank, erased, clear or silent but which point to a new understanding of media and the limits of the artistic object.
The talk, which will take place at 12pm on Thursday 11 February at the University’s Rose Bowl, City Campus, is the third instalment in the Inside/Out series hosted by the University’s School of Art, Architecture and Design (AAD).
Speaking about the series, which offers historical, theoretical and critical analyses of the arts, architecture and design, and features ten high profile industry speakers, Professor Simon Morris, organiser, said: “Our aim is to bring the best minds of our generation to inspire and support the work we are doing across the School of AAD and the Faculty of Arts, Environment and Technology at Leeds Beckett.
“We have flown some of the world’s most influential artists to speak to our students, staff, the local community and wider region. I hope that the series will draw large crowds of like-minded people who will respond well to, and enjoy, these incredible performers.”
Indiana born, Dworkin considers works created on blank sheets of paper; from a fictional collection of poems in Jean Cocteau’s Orphée, to the publication of a ream of typing paper as a book of poetry. He argues that media is interpretive activities that take place in socially inscribed space and should not be viewed as blank, base things in isolation.
Other works by Dworkin include Reading the Illegible and Fact, a poem that presents the chemical compounds of ink on paper.
The School of AAD has practice at its heart - whether working in the studio spaces in Broadcasting Place or working site-specifically. Course staff are practitioners and researchers of national and international standing.
