Finance students awarded Chancellor’s scholarship
The four first year students will each receive a £1,250 prize, awarded by Leeds Beckett’s Chancellor, Sir Bob Murray CBE.
The scholarship was created by Sir Bob Murray, who qualified as a chartered accountant from Leeds Beckett in 1972, to support high achieving students with the costs of university life.
The winners of this year’s scholarship are:
- Jack O’Brien, from Rotherham, who studies BA (Hons) Business Studies
- Mary Haileselaise Gebremeskel, from Leeds, who studies BA (Hons) Business Management with Finance
- Rahial Tanwir, from Sheffield, who studies LLB (Hons) Law with Finance
- Kerim Papila, from Wakefield, who studies BA (Hons) Business Management with Finance
Sir Bob Murray, CBE said: “It’s a real honour to be able to give these talented students an extra boost in their education. I hope that this will relieve some of the financial pressure that comes with university life and allow them to focus fully on reaching their potential.
“Education can be powerful in changing lives and I have championed this all my life. I will take real pride in following the progress of these recipients to see their achievements now and in the future.”
Leeds-based Mary Haileselaise Gebremeskel said: “I would like to thank Sir Bob Murray for the support and for giving me the opportunity to be one of the scholarship recipients. This support will definitely make a positive impact during my studies.”
Jack O’Brien added: “I feel tremendously fortunate and honoured not only to have been given the opportunity to apply for this scholarship, but to then have been awarded it.
“I also feel a sense of relief – this scholarship will certainly take away the financial issues and worries I have had since starting university. I feel like now I can fully embrace the university experience with far less worrying about money.”
Kerim Papila said: “I feel immensely fortunate and honoured for being considered and awarded this scholarship, as it will unmistakeably present me with wider opportunities, in addition to aiding my studies.”
Rahial Tanwir also praised the scholarship: “I think that this has helped me enormously financially, I felt like before I was struggling to have enough money to enjoy myself but now I can be more financially free.
“I have been extremely motivated by this and I am very appreciative.”
