Art students showcase Shadow at Milan Design Week
Huiyu and Letizia are product designers, originally from Taiwan and Italy respectively, with an interest in the interaction between 2D and 3D forms and the relationship between shadows and objects.
They were chosen from hundreds of emerging designers to be part of Milan Design Week, taking place from Tuesday 12 to Sunday 17 April. Shadow is part of the Arts Thread Designersblock 2016 showcase within the larger event.
The students’ project is based on the idea of emptiness. Huiyu explained: “We started with the repeated practices that adapt from the philosophy of Buddhism. Through the process, or just by looking at the repeated words or graphics, can bring a clear and a peaceful mind. The product design is also transformed from our repeated drawing - the interaction between 2D and 3D forms; the relationship between shadows and objects. The aim is to create the static movement and the repeated movement to reach the emptiness atmosphere with a series of ‘urban furnitures’.
“Letizia and I share the same interest in design, and we decided to try different things or take new opportunities during our year in the UK.
“We are really glad that we got the opportunity to exhibit in Milan Design Week. This is our first exhibition in Milan, and is a great opportunity to gain experience and explore new ideas and views. It's also really important that we can see so many works by the talented designers, artists, or big brands from all over the world.”
Arts Thread is the world’s leading network for new creatives – bridging the gap between education and industry; whilst Designersblock design and deliver unique exhibitions, events and experiences in the UK and internationally working with a huge network of independent designers, creative partners, commercial clients and brands to bring the most innovative ideas to the widest possible audience. For the fourth year running, Arts Thread members are showing their work in a dedicated section of Designersblock, taking place at BASE, a former industrial space on via Tortona, the heart of Milan Design Week.
