Leeds Beckett sports teams prepare for Battle of the North
The inaugural tournament will get underway at 12pm on Wednesday 26 April at Leeds Beckett’s Headingley Campus, and see teams competing in 20 fixtures across 14 sports. The day will culminate on the blue hockey astro at 5pm where the men’s hockey teams will compete.
Leeds Beckett Club Development Officer, Jo Mannion, said: “We introduced this new Varsity tournament to celebrate the end of the BUCS season; for many students this will be the last fixture they play for the University so we wanted to make it memorable. What’s unique about this Varsity is that it doesn’t focus on the first teams but encourages teams to be made up of 2nd, 3rd and 4th team players as well. We really hope this event is a success and encourage everyone to come down and show their support.”
Manchester Metropolitan University Strategic Lead for Sport, Neil Hurren, commented: “The Battle of the North is a great opportunity to extend our links with Leeds Beckett and bring together two universities who take their sports offer very seriously. We are keen to develop the competition into a yearly event and increase engagement with our students who are not only participating but also spectating at this sporting showcase.”
Entry to the Battle of the North is free and there will be a BBQ and bar on site to keep spectators and competitors refreshed throughout the day.
