Student wins prestigious marketing award
Final year Leeds Beckett BA (Hons) Marketing student, Tom Brown, teamed up with friend and fellow student Evie Johnson (Nottingham Trent) to take part in the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) competition, The Pitch, in March. Each team were set a marketing brief by student travel company, StudentUniverse, where the company was looking to replicate their success achieved in the North American market. Tom and Evie (Team Innovate) tackled this task from a strategic perspective to ensure their marketing plan adopted a holistic approach.
Talking about winning the award, Tom said: “We’re absolutely delighted to have won the Pitch competition! The Pitch has been an amazing opportunity and to be recognised by the leading UK marketing body is a great achievement.
“The competition required a balance of both content I’ve learned throughout my three years at University such as key models, as well as more realistic business applications, which is where my placement year was a huge benefit. I’d highly recommend future students to take part in the competition – it was great to be around individuals who share the same passion and it is an amazing achievement for any CV.”
Neil Kelley, Senior Lecturer in Marketing at Leeds Beckett, said: “I’m delighted for both Tom and Evie; they worked incredibly hard on their strategic marketing plan for the national competition, producing a highly professional piece of work and demonstrating real skill, ability and insight. Even though they’re both coming to the end of an incredibly hard final year of their respective degrees and Tom is relocating to Reading to start a full time graduate role at BMW, they took on the challenge and won.”
Tom and Evie were shortlisted to the final three and were announced as the winners at the Chartered Institute of Marketing Excellence Awards last week.
