Carers Week focus of latest Walk & Talk podcast
Supporting Carers Week (6-12 June), John and Val explore issues including carers and the workplace, the contribution that carers make to society and the health and wellbeing of their loved ones, as well as the joined-up, strategic approach Leeds is taking to help carers care.
Carers Week is an annual campaign to raise awareness of caring, highlight the challenges that carers face and recognise the contribution they make to families and communities throughout the UK. The campaign is brought to life by the individuals and organisations who come together to organise activities and events throughout the UK, drawing attention to just how important caring is.
Carers Leeds is a Leeds based independent charity working to provide confidential information, advice and support to adult carers. Carers Leeds was set up in 1996 with a small staff team supporting carers in Leeds. Over the last 20 years, the service has grown and now supports all adult carers, regardless of the health issues of the person they care for. Carers Leeds now employs 30 staff and works closely with six Carer Support Workers based in other organisations. Over 100 volunteers support and enhance the work of Carers Leeds.
In the second episode of the second series of the Lunchtime Walk & Talk podcast, Craig Worrall, the founder of Edible Leeds, joined John Hamilton as they discussed foraging and the abundance of wild foods on a walk from Leeds Beckett’s Headingley Campus.
The first episode of the second series of the Walk & Talk podcast focused on LGBTQ issues as part of Leeds Beckett’s celebrations of LGBT history month. John was joined by Leeds Beckett’s Equality & Diversity Manager Katrina Tilbrook, Jude Woods, the curator of the Leeds Queer Stories project, Karen Carney, a Leeds Beckett librarian, and PhD student and staff member Kit Heyam talked about her research into Edward II.
The monthly Lunchtime Walk and Talk podcast sees John Hamilton, Head of Safety, Health & Wellbeing at Leeds Beckett, in conversation with experts from our University and beyond, as they take part in the University’s regular lunchtime walks.
The Leeds Beckett Lunchtime Walking Club was launched in March 2014; walks take place on a weekly basis, at City Campus on Tuesdays and Headingley Campus on Thursdays.
Each walk is around 40 minutes in duration and between two and three miles in length with a variety of routes from both campuses so suitable for all abilities.
