Prize winners in Arts, Environment & Technology celebrate
One of those prize winners was Laura Torenbeek, who graduated this week with an MA in Filmmaking. Laura received the Provision Prize for Most Enterprising Student and has been awarded £1500 of equipment hire from Provision to get her started on the next stage of her filmmaking career.
Provision are the North’s leading supplier of film and television location equipment. Owned by ITV Studios, they have been supplying a broad range of camera, lighting, sound and grip equipment to the film and TV industry since 1989 and have bases in Leeds, Manchester and London.
Speaking about receiving the award on her graduation day, Laura said: “I was really surprised; I hadn’t thought that I would win the prize but I’m really touched. I plan to either use it for my next short film or I might try to develop a low-budget feature as my first feature film. So it will definitely come in handy!
“Now that I’ve graduated I’d love to set up my own projects: I want to direct and also produce so I can see if I can maybe do a combination of the two. I would love to work again with the people that I went to university with because we were such a good group together.
“The highlight of my course was probably when we got to make our final film project, that was really beautiful. It was really intense, we all had to work really hard, everyone really helped each other out in any way they could. That made it just perfect.”
Larra Anderson, MA Filmmaking Course Leader at Leeds Beckett, added: “Provision is a fantastic resource not only for filmmakers and the film industry as a whole, but specifically for us in its continual support and educational outreach that it does for the film school. We couldn’t do what we currently do without them and are very grateful not only for their sponsoring this generous award but for the continuing relationship that they have with us.”
Danny Howarth, Manager at Provision, said: “I established the Provision Prize as it encourages the next breed of filmmakers starting out in the industry. I hope it will give Laura the freedom to do something that she’s not previously had the budget for or that it can give her the opportunity to create something special that helps her to achieve what she wants to in her career.
“We work closely with the Northern Film School, supporting the students throughout their time at the University and we then see several students come to work for us and others as they progress and break into the industry. Congratulations to Laura and I hope she spends her prize wisely!”
