Calling all culture vultures
But what is more important, is that our students get the opportunity to be involved in many of the events that take place in and around the city. Here is just a handful from the past 12 months.
Leeds International Film Festival (LIFF)
Founded in 1987, LIFF is the largest film festival in England outside London. The increasingly popular event presents films, shorts and features (both commercial and independent) by both experienced and novice filmmakers from around the world. Not only did our students show their work at the 2016 Festival, Leeds Beckett's Big Screen in Millennium Square became a venue showing short films and animations.
Live at Leeds
This year our students supported the planning and running of the 11th citywide Live at Leeds music festival. Artists performing this year include: Rag ‘n’ Bone Man, Slaves, White Lies, Wild Beasts, and Nothing But Thieves.
Music, events management, entertainment management and broadcast media students got involved in a variety of roles over the weekend, working and performing at the annual Unconference music industry event, the Live at Leeds music festival, and the Live at Leeds Extra Time charity football match.
Light Night
Light Night is our city’s annual multi-arts and light festival, taking place in October every year. It provides a brilliant chance to explore the city in an unusual way as people make their way through a series of performances held in and around iconic Leeds landmarks and out on the city’s streets.
This year our Dance and Performance students took over Queens Square to bring to life the concept of Alchemy, bringing the urban garden landscape to life and light with actions and imagery of the elements.
Lift Off Festival
The festival, which celebrates and showcases the creative talent of students in the University’s School of Film, Music and Performing Arts, takes place in and around both the City and Headingley campuses annually.
The festival includes: an opportunity to visit Leeds Beckett’s ten recording studios; a mixed programme of graduation films; and a full programme of performance and dance events.
