The sports teams you can back if you're heading to Leeds Beckett


You’ve made your first choice: Leeds Beckett University. Next decision for sports fans? Choosing which teams to cheer on when you get here!

Leeds is home to a plethora of sports teams that compete in the city throughout the year.

So if you’re heading to Leeds this September, here is your guide to some of the teams – including one or two you might not have been aware of – to get behind.


Yorkshire Diamonds 

What: Cricket

Where: Headingley Carnegie Cricket Stadium, St Michael’s Lane

When: While the men’s side may be back-to-back County Champions, the Diamonds are now in their second season of women’s Kia Super League – a round-robin T20 competition from 10 August - 1 September. Watch their match against Lancashire Thunder live on Sky Sports on 11 August.

Leeds Beckett connections: Our University worked in partnership with Yorkshire County Cricket Club to secure one of the first Women’s Super League teams when they were unveiled by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in January 2017.

Leeds Rhinos

What: Rugby League

Where: Headingley Carnegie Rugby Stadium, St Michael’s Lane

When: The seven-time Super League champions have come back strong for the 2017 season, powering back up the table after coming close to relegation in 2016.

Leeds Beckett connections: There are a number of former and current Rhinos that have graduated or are currently studying at our University. They include Kevin Sinfield, Jamie Peacock and Jamie Jones Buchannan and talented youngsters Jimmy Keinhorst and Ashton Golding.

Yorkshire Carnegie

What: Rugby Union

Where: Headingley Carnegie Rugby Stadium, St Michael’s Lane

When: Yorkshire Carnegie narrowly missed out on a place in the Aviva Premiership last season, so will be aiming for an even stronger performance for 2017/18.

Leeds Beckett connections: Our University has had a pioneering partnership with Yorkshire Carnegie since 2007 and Professor Paul Smith is on the board of directors at the club.

Leeds Beckett students Max Green, BA (Hons) Sports Marketing, and Josh Bainbridge, BSc (Hons) Sport & Exercise Science, have both played significant roles for Yorkshire Carnegie and went on to help England to the World Rugby U20 Championship last year.

Leeds Force

What: Basketball

Where: Carnegie Sports Arena, Leeds Beckett University Headingley Campus

When: The Force compete in the British Basketball League and finished ninth out of 12 teams in the regular season standings. 

Leeds Beckett connections: The team was established in 2006 as Leeds Carnegie in partnership with Leeds Beckett University and matches are played at our University’s Sports Arena.
