Inspirational nursing student Gwen Saalmink graduates
After completing her course, she secured a job as a staff nurse on the Teenage and Young Adult cancer unit at St. James’ University Hospital in Leeds, having worked there on placement during her third year.
The placement was set up thanks to the close relationship the School of Health shares with the Leeds Teaching Hospital Trust, which helped to provide Gwen with in-depth, practical experience of the nursing profession.
“My placements that the university managed to secure for me have been so varied and have aided me in my confidence in working as a nurse when it came to qualifying.” She explains.
The unit provides in-bed care to up to nine patients at a day, with many more using the day care facility. Although daily life can be exhausting and an emotional rollercoaster, being a part of the team is something that Gwen has taken to and finds hugely rewarding.
She adds: “Although it is very intense and emotional, I feel proud of the work I do every day and the support I am able to provide to my patients.”
Gwen’s time on her course was split between university and placements, which made for long shifts and a high workload. However, with the resources available to her and the support of her course mates and lecturers, it was an environment she thrived in.
Speaking about Leeds Beckett, she says: “The university itself is great, with modern buildings and great resources to help you in your career.”
“Furthermore, the Nursing faculty are all amazing and so supportive.”
She also ensured she took full advantage of the opportunities provided to her and was selected to travel to Hong Kong Polytechnic University to learn more about pursuing a PhD within her field.
The time she spent in Asia has inspired her to continue her education and she is hoping to move into research in the future.
“Now, I am hoping to start my postgraduate certificate in Teenage and Young Adult cancer care with the aim to eventually go into research within this specific field of healthcare.”
