Beckett Art graduate back in West Yorkshire for new installation
Leeds Beckett graduate Anthea Hamilton is coming back to West Yorkshire for her latest installation, Kettle’s Yard Reimagined: Anthea Hamilton.
Turner Prize nominee Anthea, who studied BA (Hons) Fine Art and graduated in 2000, will reinstall the existing presentation of Kettle’s Yard at The Hepworth Wakefield opening on 17 September for six months.
Based on her research into the art and objects of the Kettle’s Yard Collection, Anthea will re-appropriate objects using unexpected details as starting points for new works. For example, she will create a functional cabinet to display objects from Kettle’s Yard, the previous venue for the installation; while a painting by Christopher Wood has inspired a new ‘Kimono’ piece, which will be the most recent in a series of kimonos Anthea has created. She has also invited several British and international artists, with whom she has either previously worked, or whose work is important to her, to contribute to the new installation, including French artist Laëtitia Badaut Haussmann; British artist Nicholas Byrne; German artist Daniel Sinsel and the celebrated American photographer Robert Mapplethorpe.
Anthea is one of four artists nominated for the 2016 Turner Prize: she was recognised for her solo exhibition Anthea Hamilton: Lichen! Libido! Chastity! at SculptureCenter, New York. The winner will be announced in December.
