Your handy guide to student shopping

-

One of the joys of living away from home is shopping and cooking for yourself. But where’s best to go in order to stock your cupboards? Here’s our handy guide:

Your handy guide to student shopping

Doing the big shop

Leeds has many supermarkets and there’s sure to be one not too far away from you. One favourite for City Campus-based students is Morrisons, close to bus stops across the road so you can haul your goodies home. There are also convenience-sized Waitrose and Sainsbury’s stores in the city centre too.

Headingley has a Sainsbury’s in the Arndale Centre on Otley Road, with a car park above the centre giving easy access for shoppers. There’s a Wilko’s on that parade of shops too, which stocks just about all your house-keeping needs, plates, pans, homeware, cleaning and DIY stuff as well as cards and toiletries.

Hyde Park has Abubakar Supermarkets that mainly sells meat, fruit and veg and some take-away foods. It’s between the Brudenell Social Club and the Royal Park pub on 37 Queen's Rd, Leeds LS6 1NY.

Kirkstall Valley Retail Park on Kirkstall Road has a Morrisons, Matalan, Boots, Dunnes Stores, Carphone Warehouse, and the newly built Kirkstall Bridge shopping centre hosts Home Bargains, Specsavers and, for clothing, a Peacocks, a JD Sports and an Outfit outlet.

If you are in Sugarwell Court, just up the road is Meanwood Retail Park, which has an Aldi, QLM (which sells everything), Poundstretcher and Jack Fulton’s discount foods store. On the other side of Meanwood Road is an Asda and a Waitrose.

If you are cooking anything other than egg and beans, there are continental stores with tropical vegetables, Halal products, Greek and Turkish food and lots more. Burley, Hyde Park, Roundhay Road and Chapeltown Road have Asian, Caribbean and Polish stores.

Got the late night munchies?

Sainsbury’s Local is open until midnight and has an ATM, on 72 Brudenell Road, Leeds LS6 1EG, opposite the Hyde Park Picture House.

In Meanwood near Sugarwell Court, the Jet Petrol Station stays open 24 hours a day, seven days a week for milk, groceries, sweets and magazines.

Market Yourself

Dressing up

If you see yourself as a Smurf in your evenings off, the Otley Run is the must-do-at-least-once on your uni social calendar. Groups of guys dressed as nuns or hockey players, girls as sailors and Wonder Woman, can be seen visiting pubs along the Otley Road for a swift lemonade. To kit yourself out there are two specialist shops on Otley Road:
