Professor Susan Price, Leeds Beckett's Vice Chancellor from January 2010 until September 2015, has been awarded a CBE for services to higher education.
Speaking about the news, Professor Peter Slee, current Vice Chancellor of Leeds Beckett, said: “On behalf of Leeds Beckett University I’d like to congratulate Professor Susan Price on her CBE. Susan retired in September and during her five and a half years as Vice Chancellor, she advanced Leeds Beckett enormously. We are thrilled that Susan’s life-long dedication to higher education, and in particular her commitment to Leeds Beckett University, has been acknowledged and recognised with this prestigious honour.”
Three members of the Leeds Beckett alumni community were also recognised in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list. Honorary alumna and Chair of the Health and Safety Executive, Judith Hackitt CBE (Hon DEng, 2011) was awarded a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her services to health and safety and for being a role model to young women in engineering.
Headteacher of Roundhay School in Leeds, Neil Clephan (PGCE Secondary Physical Education, 1980) received an OBE for his services to education. The school has been rated as 'outstanding' by Ofsted, with Neil himself described as 'an inspirational head teacher'. Neil was one of the first National Leaders of Education to be appointed and consistently works locally and nationally to support schools and new leaders. He remains heavily involved in sport, including as a Board Member of Leeds Rugby Foundation.
Neil said: “I feel extremely fortunate to have been nominated and know that, without the support of the Roundhay community of past and current students, colleagues, parents, governors and my family, it would never have happened.”
John Davies MBE who graduated from our University in 2011 with an MA in Executive and Business Coaching also received a Member of the British Empire for his voluntary service with the Reserve Forces and Cadets in Yorkshire and the Humber.
John said: “It was a wonderful surprise to be told that I had been put forward for an honour based on my work with the Reserve Forces and Cadets Association (RFCA) in the Yorkshire and Humber Region.”
