LBU student scoops project management award
The final year student studies Project Management in the School of Built Environment, Engineering and Computing.
Kerry, who returned to study as a mature student, won the regional award which was presented by the Association for Project Management (APM), the chartered body for this profession.
It is the fourth year in a row that our university has won the award. Fellow Leeds Beckett students, Olivia Callaghan and John Hirst, were also finalists.
Kerry won the award after showcasing how she applied her knowledge from her studies into the real world. This included a written submission, followed by a ten-minute presentation with questions after being selected as a finalist.
Kerry commented, "When the judges said my name on the night of the final I was so shocked. The other finalists were amazing and I genuinely couldn’t believe that I had won - I never win anything! Receiving some recognition made me feel so proud. Being a mature student and a mum during a global pandemic, I felt my journey at university was quite unique in some ways, and some days I wondered if I would ever complete it all, but submitting my Major Project and winning the award all in one week made everything worthwhile."
"I appreciate everything the university has done to help, guide and encourage me to learn, but most importantly given me the confidence to believe in myself."
Kerry already had real world experience and used this for her project which was based around the work she does for the web company she runs with her partner, "I was able to relate them to real life situations, allowing me a deeper understanding in some areas."
Mark Laurillard, Project Management Course Director said, "The School and course team are very proud of what our students achieve, and it is particularly pleasing that Kerry has won the prize this year: a testament to her hard work and commitment to her studies."
