Beckett Football claim first win of the season

Beckett’s men’s second team defeated York St John 3-2 to claim their first league win.

After a torrid start to their campaign, Beckett finally got their season off the mark with a hard-fought victory over fellow strugglers York St John.

Beckett came in to the fixture on the back of three defeats, in as many games, and were keen to get their first league points on the board.

The team started the game in emphatic fashion, scoring two quick-fire goals in the opening quarter, Sheldon White and Lewis Barker the scorers.

Despite their 2-0 advantage at half time, Beckett endured a scare from York – capitalising from the penalty spot after a Beckett hand ball. Some back and forth play resulted in a second goal for York St John, and a nervy last 15 minutes for both teams.

With the match finely poised at 2-2, Beckett were awarded a late penalty, and after missing a penalty earlier in the contest, Max Hayes didn’t make the same mistake twice and gave Beckett the 3-2 lead. Tensions were high between the teams, with the visitors being reduced to 10 men for the last five minutes, after their keeper received a straight red from the referee.

Beckett remained composed and secured a 3-2 win.

Beckett’s Team Manager Cameron Holmes was happy with the team’s performance and relieved to pick up their first league victory.

Cameron said “It was a great win for us. We have had a tough season so far, so it’s really good to get our first win and gives us a great platform to build from moving forward.”

Next week will feature an extra special BUCS Girl Can theme for Match of the Week, with all female sports fixtures being covered, not to be missed for Beckett fans.

Beckett students interested in participating in sport can still sign up to one of Beckett’s Athletic Union clubs.
