He was Finance Director of Yorkshire Rider in Leeds from 1986 to 1994 and Chief Executive of National Express Group from 1997 to 2006. He is currently Chairman of Lookers plc, Kier Group plc, Unite Group plc and Meridian Motor Group. He is also on the boards of Stagecoach Group plc and VP plc. Originally from Sheffield, Phil studied Accountancy and Economics at the University of Leeds and qualified as a Chartered Accountant at Deloitte.
Phil succeeds Lord Woolmer of Leeds, who led the Board in overseeing significant progress towards the University's five-year strategic plan during his tenure.
Professor Susan Price, Vice Chancellor at Leeds Metropolitan University, said: "Phil has extensive experience in executive and non-executive roles and I am delighted that he is joining us as Chair of our Board of Governors. We have seen a period of rapid transformation in the past few years and enjoyed a series of successes here at our university; I know that Phil is fully committed to our values and to ensuring our university continues to thrive."
Phil added: "I'm extremely committed to the provision of quality higher education and the opportunity it gives to all to become very employable graduates. Lord Woolmer has done a great job in the Chair at Leeds Metropolitan University and he will be a hard act to follow. The role will undoubtedly be challenging but also exciting at the same time. I'm really looking forward to working with Professor Susan Price and her team to help to achieve their plans and aspirations".
