Suitable for beginners, this course will help you learn how to build a website. You will be introduced to reading and understanding code, how to write HTML and CSS and also how to deal with common problems that occur when building websites.
You will encounter all the major elements that form a modern website and become confident working with code - from forms and tables to working with CSS to achieve more complicated layouts. The numerous practical exercises will ease you through the process and develop your skills so that you become comfortable creating and amending your own web pages.
Upon completion you will be able to:
- Understand the principles of HTML and CSS.
- Build a website from scratch.
- Use your skills to make amends to an existing website.
This course is for anyone who wants to create and edit web pages using HTML and CSS.

Overview of HTML:
- Origins of HTML and some underlying principles of how the web works eg clients and servers. You will also look at some of the differences between browsers.
The Basics of HTML:
- Hierarchical structure.
- Basic HTML document structure.
- Whitespace and line breaks.
- Hypertext links.
- Embedded images.
The Basics of CSS:
- You'll understand the relationship between HTML and CSS and learn how to link to a style sheet. You will also cover The Box Model, some Basic CSS theory and Class vs ID.
More HTML Elements:

- The box formatting model.
- Margins and padding.
- Collapsing margins.
- Background colours and images.
- Text appearance.
- Font sizes.
- Other font properties.
- Text alignment.
- We will look at some practical tasks and problems and how to deal with them: HTML emails, navigation, non-box model issues, floats issues, media queries.
Getting your website online:
- Organising a domain and web space and using FTP
Browser support and more advanced CSS3:
- A brief look at further possibilities with CSS3 and a look at browser support.
What will I learn?
You will learn:
- How to build a website from scratch using HTML and CSS.
- The importance of structure in HTML.
- How to use CSS to improve the visual styling of a website.
- How web standards enable the separation of structure and presentation.
- How to begin to optimise your website so it can be found by people using the web (search engine optimisation).

Focusing on high-quality design and intelligent ideas, his skills cover a range of digital services, including brand consulting and identity work, web design, content marketing, reactive and real-time marketing, and ultimately anything that’s delivered online.
He has designed websites for the likes of Disney, Nickelodeon, Guinness, BBC and many more. He’s appeared in numerous industry magazines along the way such as Net Magazine, Web Designer and has even appeared in publications in Japan.
