Larry Johnson Jnr
Son of former Charlotte Hornets and New York Knicks basketball player, from whom he takes his name, Larry Johnson came to Leeds from Detroit to study MSc Sports Events Management at Leeds Beckett while competing in the British Basketball League.
I heard it was a great university in a great area. I wanted to be able to play competitive basketball at league level and complete my masters at the same time. I had a few options but Leeds Beckett was clearly the best one for me.
I also love sports and want to learn more about working in the field and as [Leeds Beckett] has a great reputation for sport it seemed like the best place for me to study. Best thing about studying here is how willing tutors and classmates want to help. People want to see you succeed and push you in a good way to get the best out of you. The competition for basketball is good in the UK and is growing. The sport is in a great place right now in the UK with people wanting to learn more about it.
It’s great to be doing a sport you love while still gaining a masters – which is a big deal in the US. Especially when you’re looking to get a job in the field of sport you need to show you understand the profession and doing a masters shows you have the determination and commitment to work in this area. Doing a masters can be rigorous at times but its’ great at the same time – you learn so much and being able to study and do the sport you love is a great opportunity.
I have great tutors who are really supportive and I’m making some fantastic network connections. My classmates are wonderful – they really make the course!
Balancing my course and sport is easy – this is my sixth year now playing basketball and studying. It teaches you time management skills, commitment and being responsible. It helps you to stay focussed and stay disciplined.
It’s really important for me to do the sport I love – I love basketball – words can’t even describe how important it is being able to play the sport I love and study at the same time.
The city Leeds was one of the reasons I came to study here – it’s a great city for international students who are from an inner city area and I feel really comfortable here. People are always out and having a good time and it reminds me of a lot back home. I really like the fact it is easy to get around. It’s great city, with friendly people – it feels like home. Leeds is like a college town and everyone is so nice here.
I haven’t really thought about it too much. I’m concentrating on basketball and my studies, but I really want to be basketball coach. I’m focussing on being able to show people I am willing to work hard for something to achieve success and that can put my mind to something.
