This website contains key information on the development available to all staff, including essential development for managers and new starters. It provides access to view and book on courses through our People Development Programme, as well as access to our online training system, People Development Online.
Details of other development opportunities, such as our Leadership and Management Programmes, coaching and team building can also be found using the main tabs above.

People Development is here to benefit you and your career. Feedback, both constructive and positive, is important to us, so please let us know your thoughts and any areas where you think we can improve, including ideas for sessions and our website, by using the comments/feedback section on the right hand side. We will also ask you to evaluate any development sessions you attend, which helps with our planning for future events and activities.

Kathy's specialist areas are individual and team coaching, emotional intelligence, Myers Briggs Type Indicator and Team Management Wheel (TMSDI).

Sue specialises in Team Based Leadership. She designs and delivers senior team development events, coaching and numerous sessions for our People Development Programme. She is a Master practitioner in a number of personal and team development profiles, including TMS and Emotional Intelligence.

- Paul Tyrer - People & Organisational Development Manager
The main purpose of Paul’s role is to implement strategic and operational People Development policies and projects with specific focus on the development and delivery of the People Development Programme. Paul also works closely with our wider HR Service to deliver advice across areas of our organisational development agenda.

Our People Development Policy has the following objectives:
- To align our people development with organisational goals.
- To ensure that all of our people have equal access to suitable development opportunities for their role.
- To enable our people to enhance their performance in their current roles.
- To enable our people to develop their careers effectively.
- To ensure a consistent approach to our people development across our schools and services, and how decisions are made.
Have you seen an external course or conference that could help you in your role?
We have a process for applying for funding for courses and conferences, once you and your manager have agreed specific development in your PDR. Each area has a local development panel which meets regularly to consider requests for funded development. The People Development Team recommend that applications for funding for development above £300 (excluding expenses) are submitted to local panels, by completing the Application for Development Funding form.
However, colleagues should speak to their manager to confirm the process within their School/Service, as this amount may vary. All other development below the agreed threshold needs to be approved by your manager.

Take a look at our People Development Programme to see what we offer. Once you’ve decided on the session for you, discuss it with your line manager before booking your place through our People Development Programme/iTrent. For a guide on how to book on sessions via iTrent Employee self-service please click here.If a session is fully booked or there are no sessions scheduled you can add yourself to the waiting list via the Register Interest button in the People Development Programme. You will then receive an email notification when a space becomes available or a new session is added.
Once you have booked onto a session you will receive an automated email and an outlook appointment email to add the session booking to your Calendar. This appointment email will not automatically contain the venue of the session, so please make a note of the venue and, if necessary, manually add this in to the calendar appointment. Your manager will also receive an automated notification whenever you book a session. All bookings are made on the understanding that you have the prior permission of your manager and any cancellations should be made as soon as possible and at least three full working days in advance.
Please note, if you cancel a booking less than three full working days before a session, a £100 cancellation charge will be incurred. If you feel that there are exceptional work-related circumstances and the £100 charge should be waived, manager's can complete our Session Cancellation Fee Waiver Request form to request this.

If you are running a session and want to add this into our People Development Programme for bookings please contact us. We will discuss your session requirements with you to identify the best option and, if agreed, will ask you to fill in a short session requirements form, to provide us with the information required to add the session into our Programme and make bookings available via iTrent Employee Self-Service.
If you would like to author a new online module in our People Development Online system please complete the Request for an Online Module Form and send it to us at firstname.lastname@example.org. The form also details the process involved with authoring a new module.
Developing our people is an essential part of ensuring continued organisational performance.
In order to ensure the development we deliver is appropriate and effective in addressing individual and organisational needs it is important that the transfer of learning into the workplace is assessed through a process of review and evaluation.
Evaluation allows us to continually improve the learning and development offered through assessing whether objectives have been met; the value for money of our development activities and whether our resources are used wisely. You can help us in ensuring this by providing timely feedback on development activities you undertake. We welcome all honest feedback and comments, the good and the bad! Please do take the opportunity to have your say on what works well and provide your suggestions on how we can improve and further develop our programme by completing our evaluation surveys and questionnaires as detailed below.
How We Evaluate
Following on from any development activity that forms part of the People Development Programme we ask all staff to anonymously complete a short evaluation questionnaire. This is aimed at giving staff the opportunity to reflect on their experience of, and learning from, the development activity. It also provides valuable feedback to us so that we can continually review and improve the development on offer.
All facilitators involved in the delivery of any learning activity complete their own evaluation form as well as asking you to complete an evaluation form at the end of their sessions. If you haven’t been given the opportunity to provide feedback please contact the People Development Team. All feedback is then reviewed by the People Development Team and our facilitators are required to demonstrate how they have acted on the feedback received.
The team also evaluates all training and development activities that they deliver or administer on a regular basis. This includes reviewing all evaluation questionnaires that are submitted to assess the reaction, learning attained and impact of the activities. This information is used to continuously improve the development activities on offer to colleagues at our University.
