Case Study: Look at Art, Lock in Carbon

Building upon the emerging partnership between our University and The Hepworth, Wakefield, an internship of ten students from across the School of Art, Architecture and Design was created to form the ‘Hepworth Fringe Team’.

Headed up by Peter Dixon, Senior Lecturer at Leeds Beckett and Natalie Walton, Head of Learning at The Hepworth, Wakefield, the task was to curate a number of fringe activities to complement the opening of the new gallery over a spring weekend in May 2011.

The Hepworth Fringe Team, in conjunction with artist and collector, Greville Worthington, curated ‘Look at Art, Lock in Carbon’ as a means of connecting art and sustainability.

The Hepworth Fringe Team sourced and curated scores of fringe artists, entertainers and acts to carry and compliment the ‘charcoal’ theme and keep the attending crowds entertained whilst entering the gallery. The fringe events took place within the grounds of The Hepworth and within the new building itself, including mime artists and other street performers, illustrators and musicians. Acts incorporated the ‘charcoal’ theme within their routines.

The charcoal for the give-away was responsibly sourced and local.
