Changing Lives through Events and Festivals
The UK Centre for Events Management (UKCEM) knows better than anyone what makes an event successful - and not just financially. The team works with national and international agencies to examine all the dynamics of events activity, including the socio-economic impact of hosting events and festivals.
Events and festivals add vitality to the UK’s economic and cultural life. Commercial events contribute an estimated £12 billion annually to the UK economy.
The excitement surrounding major events enables policy-makers to make positive statements about tourism, the economy, the arts, health and wellbeing, as well as sport.
Informing and evaluating the sector
UKCEM provides research and analysis that helps various constituencies to engage in evidence-based policy and practice.
The work of the Centre highlights the socio-economic contribution to communities made by small-scale, local events as opposed to the larger, attention-grabbing events.
The UKCEM team have worked with the Shoreditch Trust in London to evaluate and develop the impact of the Shoreditch Festival. Shoreditch is one of the most deprived areas of the country. For several years, the trust has contributed to a culture-led regeneration programme which has included the Festival.
Based on findings of UKCEM’s evaluation of the Festival, the trustees were able to target spending and resources on the high impact areas of their work, resulting in a changing and flexible approach to the Festival.
The Centre provides its services to a broad spectrum of organisations and has successfully secured funding from sources as diverse as the Economic and Social Research Council, the European Commission, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the Rugby Football League and the Arts Council Yorkshire.
The Centre also houses the Journal of Policy Research in Tourism, Leisure and Events.
