Leigh Woolard

Leigh Woolard graduated from Business Information Technology at Leeds Beckett University in 2005. He attended the annual Entrepreneurial Boot Camp in July 2006 where he acquired the practical information, advice and motivation needed to start a business.

“The support from Business Start-Up was amazing. For anyone with a new idea or no idea it’s a must to get in contact and receive friendly, helpful advice. The Boot Camp was instrumental in helping me get off the ground ”

Leigh also entered the Business Concept Competition in February 2006, finishing second he received the runner up prize of £500.

Optima Semper is a search engine marketing company that Leigh started in August 2006. They manage client’s online marketing campaigns to effectively promote their products and services to their targeted audiences. From 2008 their client base has been mostly medium sized businesses including Silver Cross UK and Eura Audit International.

Their core service is Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) which is a technique of achieving high rankings, relevant to the search term entered, on search engines such as Google and Yahoo. Additional services are to provide online expertise, internet marketing services and website development strategies to increase the chance of client websites being found and making sales.

Optima Semper has now been running for 5 years and in the future they hope to grow the number of E-Commerce websites that will appear in their portfolio. Like every start-up there has been difficulties; Leigh reveals the hardest aspect of starting up was adapting the business overheads so Optima Semper could deliver a quality service. His greatest achievement was increasing profits during a difficult time for businesses and he discloses how he would not change anything if he were to re-do the process ‘I have enjoyed it along the way and learnt a lot’.

Leigh has a team of four working with Optima Semper and employs sub-contractors ‘which in this climate is a better option for our businesses’.

Leigh’s Advice:

‘Set your payment terms from the outset and get money upfront for services. Chasing money is the biggest waste of time on any business, especially new businesses’.
