Liam Newton: Aire Sustainability Consultants

Developing sustainable strategies for organisations is the aim of Liam Newton’s business ‘Aire Sustainability Consultants’, a new sustainability consultancy based in West Yorkshire.

Their services include creating business solutions and setting goals to ensure that organisations are sustainable in relation to the planet, people and profit. Liam said; “Sustainable organisations have better staff retention, greater customer loyalty and are more resilient to changes in the market due to their efficient use of resources”

Liam, a recent BSc (Hons) Construction Management graduate explains why he started up his own business after working in the construction industry for five years; “I have always wanted to be my own boss someday and, due to there being only a handful of graduate jobs going, I made the decision that the time had to be now.” Whilst studying at Leeds Beckett University Liam approached Business Start-Up for support with his idea and was encourage to apply for the £1,000 Proof of Concept grant which is provided to new businesses to help them test the feasibility of their idea. Liam said;

“I used the money to promote the business through developing my website, attending networking events and against professional registration and insurance costs. The grant was very useful in helping me take care of some of the necessary costs for my business as well as helping me to promote my business. The support and advice I received from my mentor Jenny Biddulph has been brilliant, she has put me in touch with some amazing contacts.”

“The business is now starting to generate some clients after trading for six months. Some of the work has come from places I didn't expect; schools are one of the surprise customers, I delivered a talk to a school and did some group work with children allowing them to have a go at designing a sustainable city.”

Working with schools has turned into an additional arm to Liam's business along with educating the business and construction industry of the future. Liam has also attended one of the Make It Happen rallies and learnt about the importance of networking and looking for new opportunities.
