Sustainable Urban Fringes (SURF) Project

SURF is a three year, £4.68m project involving twelve European partners.

The project aims to identify ways that urban fringe areas can contribute more effectively to the economic development and competitiveness of urban areas, whilst promoting environmental sustainability and social cohesion.

The SURF project links to earlier work by Leeds Beckett University researchers on periphery spaces, including green infrastructure in the countryside and in and around towns for the Countryside Agency/Natural England.

The SURF project began in September 2009 and runs for three years. It is divided into three work packages, with the analytical work package led by Leeds Beckett University.
