Centre for Active Lifestyles

The Active Lifestyles research group takes a holistic approach to public health, exploring how physical activity impacts on physical, social and mental health. We also specialise in evaluating the outcomes of physical activity interventions. Our work has high relevance to recent changes in the NHS and centres on improving Public Health.

Our group continues to conduct bespoke research, consultancy and evaluations for local, regional and international organisations, including primary care trusts, city councils, charities and sports groups such as Cycling England. Recently, our researchers have completed the evaluation of Premier League Health, which comprised physical activity interventions delivered in Premiership football clubs to over 10,000 so-called ‘hard-to-engage’ men. Many of these participants were reluctant to use existing health promotion services and almost one third were not even registered with a doctor. Our work also informs the work of More Life, which offers a range of modes of support to professionals, parents and young people with weight concerns, as well as offering practical programmes in the community.
