Cultures of Celebrity

Cultures of Celebrity

Led by Dr Neil Washbourne

The Cultures of Celebrity strand is concerned with the ways some people are picked out from all the others in society – the famous, the renowned, the infamous, personalities, and celebrities – and are made the meaningful, even deeply symbolic, objects of the attention of others. We seek to explore the practices by which this has taken place in the past and takes place today (variably across the world) through commemorations by individuals, groups and societies as a whole. Those commemorations may vary from keeping scrapbooks, erecting statues, creating posters, organising benefits or testimonials, creating graffiti, organising for the celebrity via social media, or making documentaries (and much more). We aim to make them the object of interdisciplinary investigation and circulate the knowledge and cultural understanding that is created.
