Cultures of Gender and Sexuality

Cultures of Gender and Sexuality

Led by Professor Alison Oram

Members of the Centre have a long tradition of internationally significant research on gender and sexuality in history, contemporary culture and media. Our interdisciplinary work examines the cultural values and social assumptions surrounding sexuality and gender, how people inhabit their bodies, and how they relate to their world based on their gendered and sexed identities.

Current research themes include: the presentation of gender and sexuality at heritage sites; femininities and subjectivity; gender, class and gardening; queer local identities; gendered colonial modernity in the British Raj; gender-crossing narratives in the twentieth century popular press; masculinities and celebrity; queer iconicity; women's testimonies of the 1899-1902 South African War.
