Location: City Campus
Length of Study: Part-time 18 months
Start Date (Taught Block Delivery):  September 2017 - 15 September 2017 (Monday - Friday)

The MSc in Corporate Governance, delivered as an intensive two week block programme, is focused towards senior executives in key leadership roles within their organisation. Typically you will have significant management experience which will include working in or with a boardroom.

The programme is designed for those wishing to explore the critical duties and responsibilities of directors working in an organisation across the primary, secondary and tertiary sectors.

The programme considers the dynamics of how businesses are ethically governed, balanced to the needs of high business performance and the demands of financial markets. It evaluates how leaders lead and focuses on the critical role of the board at establishing the vision and values of the organisation across a group. It further considers critical issues concerning company acquisitions and mergers.

The programme is delivered as a two week intensive learning experience designed to fit in to your busy lifestyle. You will work with and share best practice ideas with fellow peers, and will have the opportunity to attend guest lectures with experts from industry.

Applicants will normally hold a degree or equivalent professional qualification. Exceptionally however, consideration will be given to those who can demonstrate a recognised track record in the practice of a senior management role. This can include individuals working in private, public companies, governmental organisations, the broader public sector or voluntary communities – including individual who have non-executive director roles consultants or senior managers and self-employed entrepreneurs. This programme is of relevance to organisations addressing talent management and succession planning issues at a senior level.

The Board, the Executive & Good Governance

The module helps you to develop a practical understanding of the challenges of good and best practice in the boardroom focusing the debate on to the current issues in corporate governance facing directors and senior executive managers. In addition the modules highlight a director’s key legal responsibilities, board’s role in corporate governance and provide clarity in decision making in areas such as accountability and transparency relating to the inner working and external communications of the board. You will understand and champion the role the board and directors play in ensuring effective, ethical and good governance practice.

Managing Corporate & Stakeholder Relationships

Stakeholder engagement is often a critical part of corporate practice. The module provides you with a greater understanding of the nature, agenda and power of effective stakeholder management and the importance of embedding in sound and ethical stakeholder practices is essential for corporate growth. However, in many companies this process can be ad-hoc without any formal structure and process in place which can often be to the detriment of the organisation, exposing them to considerable reputational and financial risk.

The module takes you beyond being able to list their key stakeholders and concerns, but help you to devise a strategy that furnishes you with the process and nuances of human engagement to build effective collaborative and mutually beneficial eco-development.

This module does not seek to impose any particular values or standards but exposes the challenges of engaging in broad communities and pluralistic debate, the module will enable you to critique your values and applied virtue and more holistically explore how they can be better integrated to enhance your decision-making and leadership practice.

Dissertation (including Research Methods)

You will carry out an in-depth and applied research project in a subject area that is appropriate to the governance and executive leadership and of particular interest and relevance to you and your career aspirations.
