All research degree applicants must apply formally through the University Research Office (URO). Further guidance can be found on the Research Degrees – How to Apply page.
Potential applicants may contact academic staff to talk about their proposal or to discuss an idea. The University Research Office encourages informal discussion. However, any discussion you have with an applicant remains informal and does not constitute a formal offer. If an applicant has prepared an excellent proposal they must also meet the entrance requirements. Please refer to the attached guidance when discussing proposals with applicants.
Once the University Research Office receives an application it will verify the applicant’s qualifications to ensure they meet the entrance criteria, including English language requirements. This includes using NARIC (UK National Recognition Information Centre) to verify international qualifications. Only when the application is complete will it be sent to the relevant faculty. Faculties will assess the academic merit of the proposal and will consider whether they have supervisory capacity and the appropriate facilities to accept the applicant. All acceptances are signed off by the relevant Faculty research director.
Deadlines for applications can be found on the Research Degrees – How to Apply page.
Please phone the University Research Office with any queries about the application process on 0113 812 5375 or email email@example.com.
