About Nick Tyrer

Tutor in the Master of Architecture, MArch studio Abstract Machine.

Nick teaches in the Abstract Machine MArch studio and works at Pattern Architects, a small architectural practice highly specialized in stadium design, where he leads the practice’s research in computational design, which ranges from conceptual design to geometry rationalization for construction. He has worked on several stadiums and bids around the world, including several months supervising construction on site in the UAE. In 2013 Nick was listed as one of three inventors on a patent by the office. As a freelance designer, Nick pursues his interest in industrial design with various commissions and personal projects. Recent work was featured in London Design Week.

Research Interests

Nick’s research focuses on the application of algorithmic design to computer aided manufacturing and fabrication.

Fabricari, Nick’s Master of Architecture Thesis project (distinction, 2012), explored the application and effect of computational design to construction and fabrication, developing, prototyping and testing a range of innovative mass customised fabrication systems. Fabricari was nominated for the international RIBA Presidents Silver Medal and won the 2012 Hay’s Architecture Prize for Best Architectural Design Project.
