Therapeutic and Rehabilitation Sciences
The Therapeutic and Rehabilitation Sciences team incorporates the studies of occupational therapy, physiotherapy, sports therapy and sport and exercise medicine. The team have expertise in physical activity, exercise, health promotion and lifestyle management to foster healthy living.
Occupational therapists promote health and wellbeing through occupation to enable to people to participate in the activities of everyday life. Physiotherapists help people affected by injury, illness or disability through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education and advice. Our MSc Occupational Therapy, BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy and MSc Physiotherapy studies are approved by the regulatory Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Our MSc Occupational Therapy is accredited by the governing body of the College of Occupational Therapy (COT). Our BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy and MSc Physiotherapy studies are accredited by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (CSP).
Sports therapy is specifically concerned with the prevention of injury and with rehabilitation to enable people to return to their optimum levels of sports specific fitness and function. Our BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise Therapy course and MSc Sports and Exercise Therapy course are accredited by the Society of Sports Therapists. Each of these courses are pre-registration providing successful graduates the eligibility to apply for registration and membership of the relevant professional bodies.
Our MSc Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) is a post-registration course for qualified medical staff and allied health professionals. Sport and Exercise Medicine involves the medical or therapeutic care of injury and illness in those who wish to undertake physical activity. The course is affiliated by the British Association of Sports and Exercise Medicine (BASEM) and successful graduates are eligible to apply for membership appropriate to their profession on completion of the course.
Work Based Learning
The pre-registration courses include integrated work-based practice placements across a variety of health and social care settings as relevant to the course. All placements are quality assured in liaison with our various stakeholders.
We have excellent facilities. Our clinical skills suite enables us to deliver the practical components of the courses in modern and purpose built environments.
The majority of academic staff have clinical backgrounds. All are Fellows or Senior Fellows of the Higher Education Academy and/or have completed such courses as the Post Graduate Certificate in Academic Practice unless newly appointed.
The team is research active disseminating research by publication and conferences both nationally and internationally.
