School of Sport

Our alumni are now leaders across national and international sport

We are proud that our School’s heritage is built from the prestigious Carnegie College of Physical Training, established in 1933. This heritage links us to decades of successful alumni who are now leaders across national and international sport.

We have educated and developed generations of physical education teachers, and now boast a range of subject areas that has grown out of this foundation. These subject areas provide distinctive pathways to meet the requirements of our evolving sport and physical activity industry, and include sport & exercise science, physical activity & health, sport coaching, and sport business. As one of the largest providers of sport in UK higher education, we have a broad range of staff expertise within our school. This supports a strong interdisciplinary approach, which we deploy within our curriculum and research, ensuring a relevant and authentic education for our students.

Our heritage means that our teaching is highly influenced by our research; our staff were ranked 2nd nationally in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, when accounting for research quality and the number of contributing staff. This reflects a culture where our internationally excellent and world-leading academics are delivering innovative, research-led curriculum, ensuring a high quality learning experience. Major strengths within our wide research portfolio include obesity treatment and prevention, physical activity interventions for health, anti-doping policy and practice, professionalisation of sport coaching, and racial and gender equality within sport.

The quality of our staff and students mean we are able to build strong and productive relationships with leading industry organisations, including Public Health England, World Anti-Doping Agency, English Football Association, Rugby Football League, Sports Coach UK and the Ministry of Defence. These partnerships enable us to include high quality practical experience within our education offer, whether that is to undergraduates, postgraduates or those seeking continuing professional development.
