About Dr Helen Nichols

Dr Helen Nichols is a Senior Lecturer in Criminology and Co-Leader of the Prison Research Network (PRisoN) alongside Dr Bill Davies at Leeds Beckett University.

Between 2004 and 2016, Helen has studied Criminology at undergraduate, Masters and PhD level. She has taught Criminology at universities since 2010 which has included two posts leading degree programmes. This has involved developing a number of new modules and two degree programmes. In addition to teaching, Helen also supervises dissertations at undergraduate and Masters level.

Helen is Co-Lead of the Prison Research Network (PRisoN) which brings together academics, prisons and third sector organisations to explore opportunities for research, enterprise and education in prison and post-prison settings.

Current Teaching

On the Leeds Beckett BA (Hons) Criminology and BA (Hons) Criminology with Psychology degree programmes, Helen teaches Punishment at Level 5 and Exploring Men's Imprisonment at Level 6.

Helen has also developed an accredited Learning Together programme alongside Bill Davies with the support of colleagues at Cambridge University. This programme will involve Helen and Bill teaching Leeds Beckett students alongside serving prisoners at a high security prison.

Research Interests

Helen's research focuses broadly on contemporary adult male imprisonment. More specifically her interests lie in prison education, the experience of imprisonment and the renegotiation of masculinities and identities in the prison environment through transformative experiences. Her PhD research on Adult Male Prisoners’ Experiences of Education explored the role of education in the process of desistance through changes in conceptions of self and identity in the wake of changes in offender learning policy and penal policy more widely. Helen is now working on publishing parts of her thesis, specifically working on critically reviewing offender learning policy since 2010 and thinking more specifically about the link between education and desistance from crime.
