Dr Roshan De Silva

Senior Lecturer

Roshan is an experienced civil engineering academic having work experience in UK and overseas specializing in groundwater and surface water hydrology and hydraulics. He also has carried out research activities in groundwater hydrology in UK and in Sri Lanka.

Roshan started his career in the industry as a site engineer and after a short stint, he accepted a post at Open University in Sri Lanka where he was involved in developing the courses and programmes in both civil and agricultural engineering diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Leaving Sri Lanka and moving to UK, he worked in Kingston, Nottingham Trent and then Glasgow University in Singapore before moving to Leeds Beckett Uni in Aug 2020.

Most of Roshan’s teaching has been on fluid mechanics, hydraulics, and hydrology modules. He also has delivered maths, mechanics and computer related modules including computer programming. Roshan is a charted water and environmental manager, a charted environmentalist, a charted engineer and a fellow of the higher education academy, UK.

Roshan’s research work has been mostly on groundwater in Sri Lanka and in UK. Roshan has research extensively on estimating groundwater recharge in the dry zone of Sri Lanka and also has been active in topics like climate change and rainwater harvesting.

Current Teaching

  • Fluid Mechanics
  • Engineering Mechanics
  • Applied Mechanics
  • Supervising research projects for undergraduate and postgraduate degrees.

Research Interests

Currently Roshan is involved in research projects on groundwater hydrology, climate change and a few students projects on length of hydraulic jump and low flow control structures in small watercourses.
