About Dr Sharon Pinkney
Sharon is a Senior Lecturer at Leeds Beckett University teaching on the BA Hons Childhood Studies. Previously Sharon worked at the Open University in Social Policy Department. Researching in sociology of childhood, social work with children with care experience and child protection.
Sharon's background is in social work where she worked with children and families. Previously worked in play and youth work. She previously worked at the Open University as a Senior Lecturer in Social Policy and Staff Tutor in Social Sciences and as an Associate Dean for three years within Social Sciences was managing up to 40 academic staff at any one time.
Research interests include children's participation in decision-making, child protection, Looked After and care experienced young people, emotional and sensory dimensions of professional and children and young people relations. Recent work has been on trust relations between children and young people and social care professionals.

Current research is on Higher Educational experiences for care experienced young people. A second project is an evaluation of Independent travel for young people identified as having 'special education needs'. This project was a collaboration with Professor Nick Frost and Leeds City Council. Leeds is leading on developing this approach to independent travel training which will be developed within other authorities. A third project is writing a book on New Directions in Children’s Welfare: Professionals, Policy and Practice for Palgrave Macmillan.
